BUILDING AND CONTENTS COVER REQUIREMENTS

BUILDINGS COVER

What is the re-build cost of your property? (The sum assured should be stated on your existing policy schedule and/or renewal notice) * £
Warning – do not under-insure! ‘Average’ applies – see explanation below
What is the maximum buildings cover excess (for all claims excluding subsidence) that you wish to accept (The higher the excess, the lower the premium)? * £
Do you require accidental damage cover? (To cover broken windows etc.) *
Is there any interested party (i.e. your mortgage lender) to be noted on the policy? *

CONTENTS COVER

What is the estimated maximum value of the contents of your home that you need to cover? * £
Warning – do not under-insure! ‘Average’ applies – see explanation below
What is the maximum excess that you wish to accept (The higher the excess, the lower the premium)? * £
Do you require accidental damage cover (For example, to cover spilling paint on the carpet)? *
Are there any valuable items valued over £1000 that you wish to cover? *
Do you require personal possessions cover for any valuables whilst away from the home for example to cover loss of rings etc.? (Think carefully about whether you really want to cover personal possessions, because this type of cover is proportionately expensive) *

OTHER BENEFITS (Note – these are not available from all insurers)

Do you require Home emergency cover? *
Do you require Legal Expenses cover? (For example, to cover you if somebody tries to sue you if they are injured on your property. We do recommend this cover.) *
Do you require No Claims Discount Protection? *

AVERAGING
If the rebuild cost of your house is £200,000 and you only insure it for £100,000, and a fire does £100,000 worth of damage, the insurer will ‘average’ the damage because you are under-insured, i.e. you have only insured half the value of the house, so the insurer would only pay out half the claim, i.e. £50,000 for £100,000 of damage less any excess.
IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT YOU DO NOT UNDER-INSURE! IF YOU ARE NOT SURE ABOUT THIS PLEASE ASK OUR ADVICE.
